Obama Criticized for Abiding by Japanese Traditions

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091116/pl_afp/japanusdiplomacyasiaobama

This article is related to a recent trip Obama took to Asia. When visiting Japan he bowed to Emperor Akihito when greeting him. As a result he recieved a large amount of criticism for it from the conservatives. I find this to be completely rediculous. Different countries have different customs and this is a common greeting for formal occasions in Japan. Following the customs of a country you are visiting is a great practice and is very respectful. It should have not be an issue at all, yet it recieved a large amount of negative attention.

  1. I have mixed feelings about this. I know that it is a custom in Japan to bow upon greeting someone, but the manner he completed the jesture with was not up to par. He was still shaking his hand while completing the fast "head bob." I can see how people see it as unrespectful to those who died fighting against Japan in the World Wars, having our PRESIDENT bow to their Emperor. But I do think that relations have changed since then.
