McCain's Sexual Education Ad against Obama

This is link is to a clip from the morning/afternoon talkshow "The View". Personally, I hate this show, and the blonde really gets to me because she thinks her opinion is the only opinion and never takes anyone else's into consideration. However, this clip really represents what we discussed in class today regarding the negative ads in political campaigns and Whoopi along with the red-haired lady make some great points. Try to watch the whole thing, I found it really interesting.

  1. I found the comment in this video about the difference between advertisement and propaganda interesting. Is this ad really propaganda?

I don't think one could justify that argument and here's why: the ad literally doesn't say anything that is untrue. Talking about sexual topics, like defense against sexual predators, in school can be classified as 'sex education'. However, the words 'sex education' in our society has been associated with things like teaching safe sex practices and abstinence. Therefore, when we hear the ad say "comprehensive sex education," we assume it refers to sex education as we know it, but it does not necessarily do so.

This isn't hardcore propaganda like we've seen in Nazi germany, but it also isn't trying hard to say exactly what it means. Ironically, the ad is trying to point out Obama's loose morals but, in the end, it sort of does backfires and shows McCain's.

  2. From Wikipedia: "Propaganda is communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position."

We can call this ad propaganda for the very reason you say it isn't propaganda. Yes, in a general sense, what The View says about Obama's 'sex defence' plan is 'sex ed'. But, it is told in a way to rally people against Obama.

Also, you go from saying "I don't think one could justify that argument [that the ad is propoganda]" to "This isn't hardcore propoganda like we've seen in Nazi Germany, but it also isn't trying hard to say exactly what it means."

You're giving me two different vibes here. Anyways, I agree with your final analysis. It does make McCain look like he's out for blood.

  3. In class we had discussed negative advertising in politics, and this is a great example. McCain is trying to put Obama in a negative light by saying he has done nothing for American's besides pass a bill that teaches "sex education" to kindergardeners. This statement first, is taken out of context like the women on the view point out. There is nothing wrong with teaching kindergardeners about sexual predators, especially since their age is very vunerable.

McCain is just upset that he lost. End of story.
