'Smart Choice' Food Labeling

PepsiCo started using 'Smart Choice' labels on certain products this summer. By showing this on a product gives the impression that they are actually healthy. In reality they may not be. For example Fruit Loops had this on its box while the number one ingredient listed is sugar. The program has come under a large amount of criticism because of this. There are even more products with similar labeling that give the impression that they are healthy for you. The initial impression these labels cause may be false and could influence you to buy them.

  1. It seems that this makes it so people do not have to read the nutrition facts. If someone actually cared what was healthy then they would be reading those facts but it seems most people buy cereal at least for the taste. Hopefully they find some requirement so that they do not keep mislabeling unhealthy foods as healthy for those who do not take the time to read the label

  2. I agree with the comment above. It is odd that they would have a sense of false advertisement but at the same time if someone is that strict on healthy foods they are going to read the facts and not just the labeling. It may be that certain things are changed to make it more healthy, but it doesn't mean that it is going to be the healthiest food around. It is another way to grab shoppers attention and get their products out there.

  3. I agree that people who are really worried about their health would read the nutrition facts on the box and not just trust a label that says the food is healthy but what about the people that don't know what is healthy and what isn't. For people who look at the content in food and understand just as much of it as they would a foreign language, the label of healthy might influence whether or not they buy the product.
