hockey is a big attraction or clarkson. Lets face it other than hockey games there isn't much to do but binge drink. However I disagree with the money being thrown at students just to come here and slap a puck. The attitude of the hockey team is that they can get anything and everything they want. Recently 3 prospective hockey players raped a girl while they were up visting the school. Why should we support a lifestyle that perpetuates that?
I agree with Sean. But looking at the larger picture, what does this tell us this school values? Revenue and fame, more than supporting those who can barely afford to go here. I know I take out outrageous loans and yet I hold a high average and do well here. I see a scholarship, but nothing like I could use to help my costs. Ten million dollars torwards just scholarships across the board here would be nice to not just me, but everyone.
I think that this is absurd. For Clarkson to be granting this much money for hockey scholarships is ridiculous. I agree with the previous two comments. Clarkson should be giving this out to students who deserve it instead of to students who are barely elgible to play with their less than average grades, but who are good at hockey. The girls team is #3 in the nation. If anything, they should be rewarded for their accomplishments instead of the guys team being given outrageous amounts of money for their program that is nothing special. There are many more important things the university can give the money to than to the men's hockey team.
I disagree with the last comment. I don't want to sound like someone who doesn't care about academics or proper rewards for good students, because I definitely do seeing as I have huge loans as well. I just love sports and I would like to see our school compete for a national championship. If you understand the economics of the sporting industry, things like this are necessary and it is no different than any other top division 1 program. I don't really see a problem with funding our top program.
I would have to agree with John on this one. There are so many benefits to having a program with that kind of profile on a national scale. Let's not forget that although we are having a tough learning cycle for our team last season and carrying into this year, Clarkson still has the winningest D1 hockey program in history. Yes, little ol Clarkson holds the strongest program over the past 88 years in the country. And the hockey program is much more of a marketing and advertising scheme than people may believe. For a small school like ourselves, it is sometimes difficult to compete with many other great but massive universities. We can get huge national exposure when ESPN comes here for a game like they did last season.
Another thing: We play in the ECAC. Which consists of mainly ivy schools. And as soon as you hear ivy you think money. For us to not only compete with, but most of the time, beat schools with that kind of reputation, is quite a feat. When people hear that big Cornell got smoked by Clarkson, it turns some heads across the country.
Finally, Men's and Women's Hockey are our only sports that competes at the D1 level. Almost if not all of the other schools that Clarkson competes against have all of their sports registered as D1. Quinnipiac for instance has 25 (men and women combined) teams that compete at the D1 level. You do the math. That's a lot of money for a school that isn't that much larger than us. Hockey is Clarkson. Clarkson is Hockey.
I believe that the focus on Clarkson hockey is a double edged sword. While it is obviously the main sports attraction up here in the north country, I believe it gets too much attention as opposed to other sports teams. Teams such as the lacrosse and basketball teams should get as much press about them, regardless of their D3 status. I also believe that since professors know that Clarkson values hockey so much, they are less lenient when it comes to test taking days and rules with cheating.
As I really don't understand the magnitude of expenses in all departments here at Clarkson it is hare to be judgemental on how much gets spent on the hockey program. This does seem like a very large sum of money, but I dare everyone to put the money thing into perspective by figuring out how many classes they are scheduled to attend throughout the year and then divide their tuition by this to see how much money they pay per class. It will give you something to think about next time you want to skip class.
